The D.T.E. Consett & District Sunday League

Sunday 16th November

CONSETT Black Horse hope to be genuine Division One title contenders this season, and did their claims no harm at all with their fifth win in five league games today. They won 6-0 at Chopwell Central with two goals each from David Thompson and Carl Jones and singles from David Cooke and new signing Colin Wheatley.

Wheatley's old club Consett Steel Club have had a disappointing start to the season, losing all their league games by the odd goal, but picked up their first point with a 2-2 draw at Burton House. Adam McVickers and Martin McKinney got their goals, with Tomas Kosela getting both for the home side.

Annfield Plain Demi picked up their first win in three games, beating Blackhill Miners Arms 5-3. Stephen Kirkbride led the way with a hat-trick, and Barry Lindoe and Phil Raisbeck were also on the scoresheet. Derek Emery, David Carter and Craig Foster got the Miners' goals.

Lintz Celtic bounced back from last week's unlucky County Cup exit by winning 2-1 at Stanley RAFA. Colin Stobbart scored for the home side, but David Turner and Lee Atkins took the points back to Burnopfield.

In Division Two, something had to give as the top two – both with 100% league records – met. And it was leaders Craghead John's Castle Inn who prevailed, winning 3-2 at Tantobie Oak Tree. Gary Mackay and Lee Harvey were on target for the home side, but Kelvin Armstrong, Paul Chilton and an own goal kept the visitors' record intact.

There was another high-scoring game involving the Horse & Groom, but this time they were on the wrong end of an 8-4 win for Dipton WMC. Michael Brough and Scott Embleton both got two for Dipton, and Darren Rowcroft, Scott Somerville and Gavin Lisle also notched. The Horse & Groom's goals came from Andrew Whitfield, Ben Pearson, David Sewell and Craig Tait.

In Division Three, the top two were both in cup action. However, Newfield Inn's failure to field a side last Sunday and the subsequent deduction of three points saw them leapfrogged by Consett Fountain on goal difference. Both have 18 points, and they were joined on that mark today by Consett Demi, whose 3-1 win over Medomsley Oak was their sixth successive league victory. Richard Rouse, John Christer and Dan Coates scored for the Demi, who are unbeaten in the league since the opening day of the season, with Chris Muncaster replying for the Oak.

There was a welcome first win for Cronniwell United, 6-1 at Lanchester Queens Head. Simon Wright led the way with a hat-trick, and there were two goals for Ian Maughan and one for Peter Stephenson. The home side's reply came from Simon Merritt.

Today's other games were all in the Jack Grigg Memorial Trophy. Second Division strugglers Ball Alley met Division 3 basement club Freemasons Arms in a Preliminary Round tie, and just edged it, 2-1. Chris Beedham and Chris Phillips got their goals. The Masons' reply was an own goal.

In the 1st Round, all the games went according to league status, with no surprises to report.

Third Division Newfield Inn went down 6-1 at home to first division title hopefuls Consett Station Ex-Juniors, though no scorers are known.

League newcomers Beamish 'B' had a daunting tie against 1st Division champions South Moor FC, and went down 7-0 to goals from Ian Costello (2), Craig Suggett, Kris Soulsby, David Watson, Jamie Green and Alan Coxon.

Scott Watson was the highest individual goalscorer of the day, getting four in South Moor Sports' 5-3 win over fellow second division side Blackhill FC. Paul Wilkinson got the other, with Michael price, Chris Page and Dean Leathley on target for Blackhill.

Consett Fountain from the third division were beaten 4-2 at home by Annfield Plain Cricket Club from the second, though again no scorers were phoned in.

An Aaron Hodgson hat-trick saw Consett Braes progress 3-2 at the expense of fellow second division side Consett Top Club, who had Andy Pearson and Joe Scrivens to thanks for their goals.

Last but not least, first division Beamish 'A' had five different scorers in their 5-1 win at second division Whitehills - Kevin Douglas, Kevin Leighton, Greg Halliday, Jim Storey and Michael Box. Whitehills' consolation came from David Bates.
